Lady Eagles Tennis Cruise Past Radford 7-0

ROCK HILL, SC—The Lady Eagles tennis team finished off the regular season strong with a 7-0 win over the Radford Highlanders on senior day. Senior's Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algeria) and Giovanna Portiolli (Curitiba, Brazil) were honored at senior day and both had great matches. The Eagles finish off their regular season on a ten match winning streak improving their overall record to 15-9 and complete conference play with a perfect 9-0 record. The Lady Eagles will be the No. 1 seed in the Big South Conference Tournament that will take place this weekend at Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.

In doubles action, Yasmine Alkema and junior Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Meg Napolitano and Taylor Newman 8-1 at No. 1. At No. 2 doubles, Giovanna Portiolli and freshman Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) took down Allison Michael and Hana Babic 8-2. In the No. 3 position, sophomore Ekin Gunaysu (Ankara, Turkey) and freshman Caitlin Cridland (Perth, Australia) won an 8-0 decision over Radford's Gemma Valls and Taylor Fay.

The Lady Eagles kept their hot play rolling in their singles matches where they did not lose a single set. Yasmine Alkema played in singles match since the March 9th match vs. Georgia State. Alkema defeated Gemma Valls 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Andressa Garcia took care of Taylor Newman 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 position. At No. 3 singles, Alice Garcia defeated Hana Babic 6-0, 6-0 to finish off her perfect conference singles record (9-0). Giovanna Portiolli also finished off her perfect conference singles record (9-0) with a win over Meg Napolitano 6-1, 6-3. Caitlin Cridland defeated Taylor Fay 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Freshman Tijana Uzelac (Belgrade, Serbia) won her match vs. Allison Michael 6-1, 6-0. Uzelac also completed her perfect conference singles record at 8-0.

“I'm proud of my players for having won another regular season title, but we know that we still have a lot of tennis to play. We are looking forward in playing the conference tournament next week” said Coach Carvalho. “Go Eagles.” 

The Lady Eagles will play next in the Big South Tournament presented by Musco Lighting. The Lady Eagles' opponent has yet to be determined as it will be the winner of the #8 seed vs #9 seed play in game.
