ROCK HILL, SC-- Winthrop women's tennis defeats Gardner Webb 6-1 on a cloudy, cold Tuesday afternoon. With the victory the Lady Eagles are 8-9 on the season and improves to 3-0 in the Big South. The Winthrop women's tennis program have now won 18 consecutive conference matches (including tournament games) and the last time the Lady Eagles have lost a home conference match was on March 20, 2010 to Charleston Southern (3-4).
In doubles, senior Giovanna Portioli (Curitba, Brazil) and freshman
Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) fell to Jenny Lunde and Erica White 5-8 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles sophomore
Ekin Gunaysu (Ankara, Turkey) and freshman
Caitlin Cridland (Perth, Australia) beat Yasmin Doost and Rokia Sacko 8-4. Junior
Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman
Tijana Uzelac (Belgrade, Serebia) won No. 3 doubles by default due to an early season injury by Ronia Hutterli of Gardner Webb.
In singles play,
Caitlin Cridland defeated Valeriia Popko 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 position. In the No. 3 position, Giovanna Portioli beat Jenny Lunde 6-2, 6-1.
Andressa Garcia fell to Erica White 3-6, 2-6 at the No. 1 position. At No. 2 singles,
Alice Garcia beat Yasmin Doost 6-3, 6-3.
Tijana Uzelac ended the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Rokia Sacko at No. 5 singles.
Ekin Gunaysu won the No. 6 singles by default.
The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Saturday March, 30th vs Charleston Southern at 1:00 pm. The match will be held in North Charleston, SC.
