ROCK HILL, SC-- The Winthrop women's tennis team picked up its second conference victory with a win over Liberty 7-0 on a frigid Friday afternoon. The match improves the Lady Eagles to 7-9 on the season and 2-0 in the Big South.
The Lady Eagles got things started off in doubles at the No. 1 position with Giovanna Portioli (Curitiba, Brazil) and
Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil), who defeated Liberty's Rebekah Jenkins and Nicola Wellman 8-2. No. 2 doubles clinched the point for Winthrop as
Ekin Gunaysu (Ankara, Turkey) and
Caitlin Cridland (Perth, Australia) beat Jessie Boda and Brittany Yang 8-1. Last to finish was No. 3 doubles, where
Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and
Tijana Uzelac (Belgrade, Serbia) fell 5-8 to Liberty's Cameron Richard and Valerie Thong.
The Lady Eagles then extended their lead at the No. 3 position as Giovanna Portioli took down Brittany Yang 6-1, 6-0. At No. 1 singles
Andressa Garcia defeated Rebekah Jenkins 7-6, 6-2. At No. 2
Alice Garcia defeated Cameron Richard 6-1, 6-7, 6-2.
Caitlin Cridland took down Nicola Wellman 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Ekin Gunaysu won 6-3, 2-6, 3-0 over Valerie Thong in the No. 5 position.
Tijana Uzelac extends her singles winning streak with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Jessie Boda at No. 6 singles.
The Lady Eagles are back in action on Tuesday, March 26th at 2:00 pm vs Gardner-Webb. The match will be held at Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts where Winthrop is 3-1 on the season.
