Winthrop Women's Tennis Falls 7-0 to Nationally #1 Ranked North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, NC—The Winthrop women's tennis team falls to top ranked North Carolina 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Eagles' record drops to 5-7 on the season and 0-6 vs ITA ranked opponents.

In doubles play, the Lady Eagles dropped two of three matches to surrender the opening point of the match. At No. 2 doubles, senior Giovanna Portioli (Curitiba, Brazil) and freshman Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) lost to Caroline Price and Ashley Dai 2-8. Senior Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algeria) and junior Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) beat Gina Suarez-Malaguti and Zoe De Bruycker, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. No. 3 doubles, sophomore Ekin Gunaysu (Ankara, Turkey) and freshman Caitlin Cridland (Perth, Australia) lost to Whitney Kay and Kate Vialle 5-8. 

In singles action, the Lady Eagles failed to win a single set. The exact opposite of what they did to Presbyterian on Thursday when the Eagles won every set. No. 6 singles finished first with Gunaysu falling to Kate Vialle 4-6, 1-6. No. 2 singles had Andressa Garcia falling to #19 Whitnry Kay 3-6, 1-6. At the No. 3 spot Alice Garcia saw her singles match win streak come to an end with a 1-6, 4-6 loss to #25 Caroline Price. Next to finish was No. 5 singles, where Caitlin Cridland fell to #93 Tessa Lyons 4-6, 4-6. Giovanna Portioli lost 2-6, 1-6 to #101 Ashley Dai in the No. 4 position. Yasmine Alkema lost to #32 Zoe De Bruycker 4-6, 1-6 in the final match of the game.

The Lady Eagles have a week off before they take on nationally ranked Georgia State Saturday March 9th at 10:00 am at Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
