RICHMOND, VA-- The Lady Eagles fall to the #47 VCU Rams 6-1 on Super Bowl Sunday morning. The Eagles have dropped three straight matches against nationally ranked opponents.
VCU started off early winning the #3 seed doubles matches with Olga Barscheuskaya and Salome Kvitashvili beating sophmore
Ekin Gunaysu (
Ankara, Turkey) and freshman
Caitlin Cridland (
Perth, Australia) 8-2. VCU then won the #2 seed doubles 8-3 behind Daria Yakauleva and Olga Terteac defeating freshman
Alice Garcia (
Brasilia, Brazil) and senior Giovanna Portioli (
Curitiba, Brazil). VCU's Josefin Hjertquist and Yukako Noi were winning over senior
Yasmine Alkema (
Algiers, Algeria) and junior
Andressa Garcia (
Sao Paulo, Brazil) 8-6 when their match was stopped.
In singles play, the Lady Eagles' #95th ranked Alkema defeated VCU's #46th ranked Kvitashvili 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Then 2 seed
Andressa Garcia fell to Terteac 5-7, 6-7. 3 seed
Alice Garcia fell to Noi 1-6, 5-7 and 4 seed Piortioli lost to Hjertquist 4-6, 1-6; giving Piortioli her first singles loss of the season. Finishing out the singles round was 5 seed Cridland losing to Barscheuskaya 4-6, 6-3, 4-6 and 6 seed Gunaysu falling to Alesha 6-7, 6-2, 6-10.
The Lady Eagles are back in action Saturday against ACC foe Wake Forest at 2:00 pm.
