CLINTON, SC-- The Winthrop women's tennis team claimed their first Big South contest 7-0 versus Presbyterian College. The reigning Big South champs improved their record to 5-6 and start 1-0 in conference play.
In doubles play, the Lady Eagles won all three matches. No. 1 doubles, senior
Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algeria) and freshman
Tijana Uzelac (Belgrade, Serbia) defeated Greer Ransom and Lindsay Krause 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, senior Giovanna Portioli (Curitiba, Brazil) and freshman
Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) defeated Patricia Alves and Courtney Gardiner 8-6. At No. 3, sophomore
Ekin Gunaysu (Ankara, Turkey) and freshman
Caitlin Cridland (Perth, Australia) beat Carolina DeLoach and Kayla Stanford 8-2.
In singles action, the Lady Ealges did not lost a single set. No. 1 singles,
Yasmine Alkema won 6-2, 6-2 over Greer Ransom. At No. 2,
Alice Garcia beat Patricia Alves 6-3, 6-4. Garcia has now won seven consecutive singles matches. Giovanna Portioli defeated Carolina DeLoach 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 3 position. In the No. 4 spot,
Caitlin Cridland defeated Lindsay Krause 6-1, 6-1.
Ekin Gunaysu won 6-1, 6-0 over Lucia Leahy in the No. 5 position. At No. 6 singles,
Tijana Uzelac beat Haley Elliott 6-0, 6-0.
Winthrop gets a crack at the #1 team in the country on Saturday, as they travel to Chapel Hill to play the Lady Tar Heels at 11:00 am. The Lady Eagles then have a week off before nationally ranked Georgia State comes to visit on Saturday, March 9th at 10:00 am.
