ROCK HILL, SC-- The Lady Eagles tennis team defeats Furman 7-0 on a crystal clear Sunday afternoon at Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts. This win boosts Winthrop's record to 4-6 overall and 2-0 at home.
In doubles play, the Lady Eagles won two out of three matches to claim the doubles point. The doubles point was decided by No. 2 doubles freshman
Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) and senior Giovanna Portioli (Curitiba, Brazil) defeated Michele Stanford and Amanda Murray of Furman 8-5. Finishing just before No. 2 doubles was No. 3 doubles, where sophomore

Caitlin Cridland (Perth, Australia) defeated Margaret Boyette and Kelly Sullivan 8-5. Senior
Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algeria) and junior
Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) lost to Lauren Kline and Alex Moreno-Kaste 5-8.
In singles play,
Caitlin Cridland defeated Kelly Sullivan 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 position. Next to end was No. 6 singles with
Ekin Gunaysu beating Margaret Boyette 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. The Lady Eagles got the clinching fourth point with Giovanna Portioli in No. 4 singles. Portioli defeated Amanda Murray 6-2, 6-3. #107
Yasmine Alkema outlasted #110 Lauren Kline 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (3) in No. 1 singles.
Alice Garcia came from behind to extend her winning streak to 6 games. She defeated Michele Stanford 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (8). The No. 2 singles match finished last with
Andressa Garcia winning against Katherine Oudin 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (8).
"I am proud of my players for having played three tough matches this weekend. After playing a tough match against NC State Friday night, they turned around and played well and beat Louisiville and Furman," said Coach Carvalho. "We are looking forward to playing Presbyterian and going to Chapel Hill to play North Carolina this weekend."
The Lady Eagles will open conference play Thusday, Feb. 28th when they travel to Clinton, SC to take on Presbyterian College at 1 pm. The Lady Eagles will then travel to Chapel Hill, NC to play top ranked North Carolina in a 3:30 match on Saturday, March 1st.
