HUNTINGTON, WV-- Winthrop Women's Tennis team lost two matches this weekend to Marshall and #48 Penn State by identical scores of 4-3 at the Huntington Tennis Club. The two losses drop the Eagles' record to 2-5 on the season.
On Friday Winthrop lost a tough match to Marshall. The match took over four hours to play and came down to the final singles match between sophmore
Ekin Gunaysu (Ankara, Turkey) and Karlyn Timko. Gunaysu fell to Timko 6-1, 4-6, 3-6. The singles play started off strong for Winthrop with freshman
Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) beating Dana Oppinger 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 3 position. The next match to end was the No. 5 position with freshman
Caitlin Cridland (Perth Australia) losing to Kara Kucin 3-6, 4-6. The No. 1 seeds match, #107
Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algeria) defeated Dominika Zaprazna 5-7, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Giovanna Portioli (Curitiba, Brazil) lost to Kai Broomfield 6-1, 2-6, 1-6 in the No. 4 spot. The Eagles tied the match at three when junior
Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) beat Maria Voscekova 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles play, No. 2 seed Portioli and
Alice Garcia won Kucin and Ellie Ball 8-1. The Lady Eagles failed to close out doubles play losing the final two matches. No.3 seed Gunaysu and Cridland lost 2-8 to Timko and Oppinger and No. 1 seed Alkema and
Andressa Garcia lost 2-8 to Zaprazna and Voscekova.
On Saturday, the Lady Eagles suffered another hard fought loss, this time to a nationally ranked team in Penn St. In doubles play No. 1 seed
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia fell to Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting 8-3. In the No. 2 position Giovanna Portioli and
Alice Garcia beat Katherine Whiteaway and Jacqueline Zuhse 8-6. Penn St. went on to take the doubles point in the No. 3 match with freshman
Tijana Uzelac (Belgrade, Serbia) and
Ekin Gunaysu losing to Devan McCluskey and Carmen Sandor 4-8.
In singles play, the No. 2 match featured
Andressa Garcia losing to Chelsea Utting 3-6, 0-6. In the No. 1 position #107 Alkema lost to #36 Januskova 2-6, 4-6. Next to finish was the No. 5 postion with Gunaysu falling to Zuhse 6-4, 0-6, 0-6. From this point on, the match was decided with Penn St. having reached its fourth point, but the Lady Eagles did not quit and reeled off the final three points with No. 3 position of
Alice Garcia beating Devan McCluskey 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 4 spot Portioli beat Sandor 2-6, 6-2, 10-3. The match ended with the No. 6 position in Uzelac defeating Sarah Henderson 7-6, 6-2.
The Lady Eagles are back in action on Friday, February 22nd as they take on NC State in Raleigh, NC.
