Wendt Announces Signing Of Two Standout High School Golfers

ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop women's golf coach Jodi Wendt has announced the signings of local golfer Chandler Case from South Pointe High School and Ashley Sloup of South Brunswick High School in South Port, NC to national letters of intent.

"I am really excited to have another local girl join our program," said Wendt about Case. "Chandler has enjoyed a great high school career and I can't wait to see how well she will perform in college."

"Ashley (Sloup), too, has had a great junior career," said Winthrop's coach. "I believe she can make a big impact on our team as soon as she walks on campus."

Case's career has been filled with honors and awards. She is a five-time South Carolina All-Region selection, and has been a four-time All-Area Team selection by The Herald, a three-time All-Observer First Team member, and was The Herald All-Area Athlete of the Year in 2001 and 2012. Case also earned Class 4A All-State recognition in 2012, the same year in which she captured the South Carolina Junior Golf Association Todd All-Star Championship.

In 2013, Case was the Region Medalist as she set a new region record with a low round of 69. She was also a top 20 finisher at both the Upper State and State Championships. She has been named her team MVP for four years while playing for her mother, Coach Kimberly Case.

In addition to her prowess on the golf course, Case has excelled in the classroom as well. She is a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society and is a Junior Marshall. She maintains a 4.4 grade point average and ranks in the top 10 percent of her class at South Point.

Sloup is coming off a strong junior season in which she posted the lowest scoring average in the Mideastern Conference at 36.9 strokes per nine holes, won the East 3A Regional championship and finished as the state 3A runner-up. She captained a Lady Cougar squad that won regional championships in 2012 and 2013, the first in school history.

This year alone on the junior golf circuit, Sloup finished third at the Preseason Junior at St. James Plantation, first at a Hurricane Junior Golf Tour event in Myrtle Beach and fifth at the Carolinas Dogwood State Junior Championship in Wallace, NC. She's currently 12th in the North Carolina junior girls' golf rankings. She also holds the women's course record at Brunswick Plantation & Golf Resort at Calabash with a 69.

Sloup experienced perhaps the highlight of her career in September when she was one of 81 First Tee members nationwide selected to participate in the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, CA. Her partner for three days in the Champions Tour event was pro golf legend Fred Couples, and she also played alongside partner Kirk Triplett in the Coca Cola Champions Challenge at Pebble Beach.

Like Case, she is also a strong student with a grade-point average of 4.2 and a ranking in the top 10-percent of her class.
