ROCK HILL, SC--The Winthrop women's tennis team opened the 2013 spring season wtih a 7-0 win over Wofford on an unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon at Memorial Courts in Rock Hill.
The Lady Eagles started off by winning the doubles with No. 1s junior
Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman
Tijana Uzelac (Belgrade, Serbia) 8-2 win over Wofford's Sarah Evans and Guinn Garcia, and the No. 2s senior Giovanna Portioli (Curitiba, Brazil) and freshman
Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) beating Othilia Lindqvist and Mareli Sanchez 8-3. The last double's match with No. 3s sophmore
Ekin Gunaysu (Ankara, Turkey) and freshman
Caitlin Cridland (Perth, Australia) vs Wofford's Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn did not finish.
Alice Garcia and Giovanna Portioli set the tone early in the singles by beating their No. 2 and No. 3 opponents Audrey Conventry 6-2, 6-1 and Julia Paulson 6-1, 6-0. Winthrop's No. 1 player
Andressa Garcia defeated Sarah Evans 6-4, 6-1 and sophomore
Ekin Gunaysu defeated Lucy Schermerhorn 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. at No. 5 singles.
Two other Eagle freshmen
Tijana Uzelac and
Caitlin Cridland won their matches by defeating Emily Przystawski 6-1, 7-6 at No. 6 and Mareli Sanchez 7-6, 6-4 at No. 4. The win for
Tijana Uzelac's was her first collegiate victory.
Senior
Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algeria) and sophomore
Camille` Amrani (Brussels, Belgium) did not play in the season opener.
The Lady Eagles start an eight game road trip beginning next Saturday at 1p.m. at College of Charleston. Winthrop's next home match is Feb. 24
th vs. Furman.
