ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's tennis team fell behind after the doubles round, but clawed its way back into the match and defeating Coastal Carolina 6-1 in a battle of unbeatens Friday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.
With the victory, the Eagles improve their perfect conference record to 7-0 and earn an above .500 record of 11-10. Coastal falls to 13-4 on the season and 5-1 in the Big South.
After the Eagles could not manage victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions, the lone doubles round victory came from
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia, who remained unbeaten in the conference. The duo brought down Miki Bunea and Diana Mortlock 8-5 at the No. 1 spot.
Winthrop stormed back in the singles round, cruising in all six matches to capture the match. Garcia started the winning trend with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mortlock at the No.2 position, as Alkema followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bunea at the No. 1 spot. Freshman Ekin Gunaysu avenged a doubles loss, as she brought down Kourtney Kowal 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5, and
Sandra Herrera clinched the win for Winthrop as she took down Katie Fosbacht 6-3, 6-1 in No. 3 singles.
After the deciding match, freshman Monica Aguado fought herself back into the No. 6 singles match, after being shutout in the opening set. She closed out the day with a 0-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Amanda Malatek. Giovanna Portioli closed out the singles round with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.
“I'm so proud of my girls on how they playing during singles,” head coach

Winthrop will be back in action on Friday, April 13 as the Eagles will face Presbyterian College at the Memorial Courts. That doubles round will be at 1 p.m. and admission is free.
