ASHEVILLE, NC – The top-seeded Winthrop women's team advanced in the Big South Women's Tennis Championship, as the Eagles eliminated UNC Asheville 4-0 Thursday morning at the Asheville Racquet Club South.
The win puts Winthrop at 13-10 on the season into the semi-finals, played tomorrow morning. The Eagles will face Radford on Friday, as the Highlanders defeated fifth-seeded Gardner-Webb 4-1 in the second match of the tournament.
Winthrop controlled the doubles round to open the match, quickly capturing the doubles round with two victories. Senior
Sandra Herrera and junior Giovanna Portioli cruised to an 8-0 win at the No. 2 position, as freshmen Camille Amrani and Ekin Gunaysu earned an 8-2 victory at the No. 3 spot.
The Eagles continued to roll in the singles round, as the conference's regular season champions earned two 6-0, 6-0 victories. Portioli captured the first shutout, defeating Asheville's Jenna Dodge. Gunaysu followed with a shutout win of her own, blanking Amie Cloer at the No. 5 position. Two-time Big South Conference Player of the Year clinched the victory for Winthrop, as the junior defeated Emily McNall 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 slot.
Winthrop will be back on the courts Friday, April 20 at 10 a.m. against fourth-seeded Radford. The Eagles defeated Radford 6-1 on April 1.
