Men's Tennis Earns Fifth Seed For Big South Conference Tournament

Eagles Will Square Off Against #4 Campbell On Thursday At 10:30 a.m.

ROCK HILL, SC – With the 4-3 victory over Presbyterian College on Friday, the Winthrop men's tennis team earned the No. 5 seed in the 2012 Big South Conference Men's Tennis Championship and will face fourth-seeded Campbell on Thursday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m., the conference announced on Sunday.

The Eagles finished the season 3-4 in conference play and tied with Liberty for fifth place. Winthrop held the tiebreaker over the Flames with its 4-3 victory on March 31, in Lynchburg.

With the No. 5 seed, the Eagles will face the No. 4 seed Campbell on Thursday, April 19 at the Asheville Racquet Club downtown. The Camels closed out their 2012 season with a 10-10 overall record, and a 4-3 mark in the conference. In the previous meeting between the teams, Winthrop came up short, falling 4-3 at the Memorial Courts.

The Winthrop, Campbell matchup will be the second match of the opening day, as the No. 1 seed Radford will face the No. 8 seed Gardner-Webb at 8:30 a.m. The Eagles and Camels will start around 10:30 a.m., pending on the finishing time of the previous match. Following the second match will be the host, second-seeded UNC Asheville and No. 7 seed Presbyterian College at 1:30 p.m., while No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina will square off against sixth-seeded Liberty. That match will begin around 3:30 p.m.

The Big South's Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament.  The Conference Championship schedule is as follows:

Thursday, April 19 – Asheville, N.C.
Match 1:  No. 1 Radford vs. No. 8 Gardner-Webb, 8:30am ET
Match 2:  No. 4 Campbell vs. No. 5 Winthrop, not before 10:30am ET
Match 3:  No. 2 UNC Asheville vs. No. 7 Presbyterian College, 1:30pm ET
Match 4:  No. 3 Coastal Carolina vs. No. 6 Liberty, not before 3:30pm ET

Friday, April 20 (semifinals) – Asheville N.C.
Match 5:  Match 1 winner vs. Match 2 winner, 10:00am ET
Match 6:  Match 3 winner vs. Match 4 winner, 1:00pm ET

Saturday, April 21 (Finals) – Asheville, N.C.
Match 7:  Match 5 winner vs. Match 6 winner, 1:00pm ET
