ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop women's tennis team clinched their fifteenth regular season conference championship in twenty years Friday afternoon with a 7-0 victory over Presbyterian College on Senior Day.

The victory takes Winthrop to a perfect 8-0 conference record and a 12-10 mark, overall. The win also clinches the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, starting next Thursday. This is the third straight conference regular season title for the Eagles.

“I'm proud of my girls for winning the regular season and going undefeated,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “We're looking forward to the Big South Tournament.”

The Eagles started strong in the doubles round, cruising in all three matches over Presbyterian College (10-13, 1-7). Junior Yasmine Alkema and sophomore Andressa Garcia closed out Paige Oelke and Patricia Alves 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, insuring the tandem will finish the conference schedule with a perfect 8-0 at the No. 1 doubles position.

Senior Sandra Herrera and junior Giovanna Portioli blanked Caroline deLoach and Greer Ransom 8-0 at the No. 2 position, while freshmen Ekin Gunaysu and Camille Amrani earned an 8-4 win over Lindsay Krause and Cara Caruso at the No. 3 spot.

In the singles round, Winthrop continued to roll, claiming straight-set victories in all six matches. Alkema, Garcia and Portioli dropped just five games combined, as they all finished the conference season with perfect 8-0 records in their respective flights.

Herrera tallied a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ransom at the No. 3 position in her final match at Memorial Courts, and freshmen Gunaysu and Monica Aguado also earned victories to close out the 7-0 victory.

“I appreciate everything Sandra has done during her stellar career,” Carvalho said. “We will miss her and we wish her the best of luck during the rest of her career.”

Winthrop will begin its tournament run on Thursday, April 19 in Asheville, NC, as the Eagles will face the No. 8 seed that will be determined after this weekend's matches. That match is slated for 8:30 a.m.
