ROCK HILL, SC –
On a day to honor seniors Nadav Ruppin and Guy Kubi, it was junior Liran Levy who stole the spotlight, as Levy clinched the 4-3 victory over Presbyterian College Friday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.

With the victory over the Blue Hose, Winthrop improves to 3-4 in conference play and a 10-13 mark on the season, while PC falls to 11-15 overall and 1-6 in the Big South.

“Nadav (Ruppin) and Guy (Kubi) mean so much to this program, they are some of the greatest competitors I know,” head coach Andrew Stubbs said. “The rest of the team feeds of them and it has become part of the culture.”

Playing down a doubles pair, the Eagles came up short in the doubles round, claiming one victory. Junior Nadav Ruppin and freshman Dylan Comerford defeated Rafeal Berghaus and Grayson Mills 8-5 at the No. 1 position, but later, sophomore Yuta Hirokawa and senior Guy Kubi fell 9-7 to PC's duo of William O'Connell and Andrew Brigham.

In the singles round, senior Nadav Ruppin made his last trip to Memorial Courts a memorable one, defeating Berghaus 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 position. Hirokawa and Comerford followed the senior with straight-set victories of their own at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively.

After the Blue Hose captured two singles matches, the overall result rested on the No. 6 spot. After Levy captured the first set 7-6, teams huddled around the court to watch Levy capture the set and the match for Winthrop, 6-4 over Gonzalo Asis.

“I told the guys that this was a must win, that the tournament started today for us,” Stubbs said. “This win will give us some confidence going into the tournament.”

The Eagles will be back on the courts when they open up the first round of the conference tournament on Thursday, April 19 in Asheville, NC. Times and pairings will be released after all the conference's matches are finalized.
