Men's Tennis Goes 2-0 In Tuesday Doubleheader

The Winthrop men's tennis team evened up its record as the Eagles shutout Coker 4-0 and defeated James Madison 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.

The victories bring the Eagles to 6-6 on the season as they will head into their spring break road trip this weekend.

Winthrop 4, Coker 0

The Eagles started strong against Division II opponent Coker, cruising to capture all three doubles matches. In the No. 1 position, Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin knocked off Leonardo Lima and Manel Estruga 8-7. At No. 2, the freshman tandem of Dylan Comerford and Rich Meade brought down Guillermo Aylon and James Corfield 8-1. Rounding out the doubles round, Yuta Hirokawa and Luka Stanic defeated Billy Simpson and Ricardo Perez 8-2 at No. 3.

In the singles round, Winthrop continued to roll, as the Eagles nabbed three victories to clinch the victory. Kubi captured a win in an unfamiliar No. 1 position, defeating Lima, 6-3, 6-1. Stanic got a victory over Corfield 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, and Meade brought down Simpson 6-0, 6-1 in No. 5 singles.

Winthrop 5, James Madison 2

In the doubles round, Kubi and Ruppin clinched the point for the Eagles as they came away with an 8-6 victory over JMU's Greg Vladimirsky and Bertrand Moulin at the No. 1 position. The first victory came at No. 3 as Hirokawa and Stanic grabbed their second doubles victory of the day, knocking off Bastien Russo and Hugo Ramadier 8-2.

Winthrop posted four singles victories to clinch the match as Hirokawa brought down Florent Sentenac 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Also winning in straight sets was Meade, as the freshman defeated Jovan Milic 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot. Winning in three sets, Comerford took down Moulin 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Stanic polished off his perfect afternoon with a victory over Tommi Nissinen 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 at No. 5 singles.

"We competed well from the beginning to the end today," head coach Andrew Stubbs said. "We are gaining confidence as a team and our improvement over the last few weeks will only push us to work even harder."

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, March 10 as they will remain at the Memorial Courts to take on Furman at 2 p.m. Winthrop will then travel to the state of Florida to play in three matches in seven days.
