LYNCHBURG, VA – The Winthrop women's tennis team remained unbeaten in the conference as the Eagles blanked Liberty 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Hershey Tennis Courts.
With the victory, the Eagles move to 9-10 on the year and 5-0 in the Big South, as Liberty falls to 10-11 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
In the doubles round, the Eagles earned the doubles point, capturing all three matches. At the No. 1 spot,
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia defeated Cameron Richard and Brittany Yang 8-5, as Giovanna Portioli and
Sandra Herrera knocked off Rebekah Jenkins and Alexandra Sheeran 8-6 at the No. 2 position. Rounding out the doubles round was Monica Aguado and Ekin Gunaysu taking down Jessie Boda and Carol Lobel 9-8 at No. 3.
With the momentum created in the doubles round, the Eagles continued their winning trend in the singles round. Alkema continued her dominance in the conference, defeating Sheeran 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, as Garica captured a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Richard at the No. 2 spot. In No. 3 singles, Herrera brought down Yang 6-2, 6-1, as Portioli tallied a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jenkins in No. 4. Closing out the singles match was Aguado defeating Nicola Wellman 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6, as Gunaysu went three sets with Lobel, eventually winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot.
“We played a good match against Liberty,” head coach
Cid Carvalho said. “We played well on the key points of every match.”
Winthrop will remain in Virginia and head to Radford on Sunday, April 1. That match is set for 1 p.m.
