LYNCHBURG, VA – Despite not having a full squad, the Winthrop men's tennis earned a 4-3 victory over Liberty Saturday afternoon at the Hershey Tennis Courts.
The victory improves Winthrop's record to 9-11 on the season and 2-2 in the conference, as the Flames fall to 13-6 on the year and 2-3 in the Big South.
“I am extremely proud of our guys today,” head coach Andrew Stubbs said. “We competed better today than we have all season.”
The Eagles could not fill four of the six slots in the doubles round and fell in the other two doubles matches to drop the opening point.
In the singles round, Winthrop managed a comeback, capturing four singles matches to nab its ninth win of the season.
Guy Kubi cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Liberty's Siim Tuus at the No. 1 position, as freshman
Dylan Comerford brought down Dillon Segur 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot.
Nadav Ruppin added another win to his total, as the senior knocked off Giancarlo Lemmi 7-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
The match came down to No. 2 singles as
Yuta Hirokawa and Shea Thomas fought to three sets. After falling in the first set, Hirokawa stormed back and clinched the match for the Eagles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
“We didn't make any excuses and we found a way to get the win,” Stubbs said. “We are looking forward to our match tomorrow against Radford.”
Winthrop will be back in action on Sunday, April 1 as the Eagles will continue its conference schedule in Radford. The doubles round is set for 1 p.m.
