BOILING SPRINGS, NC – The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs used a five-run fourth inning to propel itself to a 5-1 victory over the Winthrop Eagles on Saturday afternoon at John Henry Moss Stadium in game two of a three-game Big South Conference series.
The Eagles fall to 8-20 on the season and 1-4 in the conference, while the Runnin' Bulldogs improve their record to 16-12 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Conner Scarborough (2-3) earned the win after tossing the first complete game of his career giving up one run on four hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
Eric Ruth (2-2) took the loss allowing five runs on seven hits, no walks and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
TJ Olesczuk would give Winthrop a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on his RBI sacrifice fly to center field, which scored
Jason Driver from third base. Driver led off the game with a double to right field, his seventh of the season, and then moved to third when
Max Vogel grounded back to Scarborough on the mound.
Ruth started the game on a positive note by retiring eight of the first nine batters he faced, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth as Gardner-Webb plated five runs on six hits to take a 5-1 lead as Ruth was replaced on the mound by
Michael Gilroy. Five of the Runnin' Bulldogs six hits were singles, with the inning highlighted by a two RBI single by Adam McFarland and an RBI double by Brad Collins. Zeke Blanton picked up an RBI on a suicide squeeze with one out in the inning, and Dusty Quattlebaum got the scoring started with his RBI single to right field.
Vogel would lead the Eagles offensively with two hits, tying his season-high, while Olesczuk recorded the lone RBI. Driver and
Matt Lobacz also had one hit each for Winthrop. Quattlebaum and John Harris each had two hits to lead the Gardner-Webb offense, and McFarland drove in a team-high two RBI.
The Eagles and Runnin' Bulldogs will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday, Apr. 1 at 2 p.m.
