ROCK HILL, SC -- The Winthrop men's and women's tennis teams head to Virginia this weekend to continue their conference schedules, as the both will take on Liberty on Saturday and Radford on Sunday.
The men's tennis team enters the weekend with an 8-11 overall record and a 1-2 conference mark. The Eagles will look to snap a two-match skid after falling to UNC Asheville it their last match over the weekend. Last season, Winthrop defeated both Liberty and Radford to eventually finish the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record in conference play. The Eagles went on to face Radford in the Big South Conference Championship, but fell 4-3 to the Highlanders in a hard fought battle.
Both Liberty and Radford come into the weekend with impressive records. The Flames are 13-5 on the season, capturing a 6-1 victory over Morgan State in their last match. Radford currently shares the top spot in the conference with UNC Asheville, as the Highlanders hold a 3-0 conference record. In Radford's last match, the Highlanders knocked off James Madison 4-3.
The Winthrop women's tennis team is currently riding a six-match regular season conference winning streak, dating back to last season. Winthrop is now 8-10 on the season and a perfect 4-0 for the conference, currently tied with Coastal Carolina atop the conference standings. The Eagles are led by junior
Yasmine Alkema, who is 11-4 on the season at the No. 1 position.
The Lady Flames enter the weekend with a 9-10 overall mark and currently tied with Radford for fifth in the conference standings, both at 2-3 in the league. Both squads are coming off wins in their last matches, as Liberty swept Norfolk State 7-0 and Radford defeated Longwood 5-2.
Winthrop will begin its Virginia road trip at Liberty on Saturday, as the women are set to begin at 10 a.m. and the men will follow at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the Eagles will head to Radford where the men's and women's matches will begin at 1 p.m.
