ASHEVILLE, NC – Sophomore
Yuta Hirokawa earned his eleventh singles victory on the season, but the Winthrop men's tennis team could not keep up with conference foe UNC Asheville, as the Eagles fell 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.
The loss puts Winthrop at 8-11 overall and 1-2 in the Big South, as Asheville improves to 9-6 on the season and 2-0 in the conference. It was the first win for UNC Asheville over the Eagles since 1998.
After the Eagles could not capture a match in the doubles round, Hirokawa posted a win over UNC Asheville's Jonas Brobeck 7-6, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Winthrop's
Luka Stanic forced his match into three sets, but eventually fell to Ryan Matthews 7-6, 0-6, 10-3 at the No. 5 spot.
The Eagles will continue their conference road trip as they will square off against Liberty on Saturday, March 31. That match is set for 1 p.m.
