ROCK HILL, SC – In a battle of unbeatens within the conference, Winthrop found itself victorious as the Eagles knocked off Charleston Southern 5-2 Friday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.
The key conference win improves Winthrop's record to 8-10 overall and 4-0 in the Big South, as the Buccaneers fall to 9-3 on the year and 2-1 in the conference.
In the doubles round, the duo of
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia tallied their 11
th doubles victory of the year, defeating Olga Makhova and Marija Dzakovic 8-2 at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 position
Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli knocked off Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters 8-1, as Ekin Gunaysu and Monica Aguado posted an 8-5 win over Angelica Sidorenko and Alia Nour at the No. 3 spot.
As the match progressed into the singles round, Alkema got on the scoreboard first, nabbing a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Makhova in No. 1 singles. Herrera followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over her own at the No. 3 position.
After dropping the deciding match against Marshall, Portioli found herself clinching the victory for the Eagles as she brought down Dzakovic 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 4 position. The victory was Portioli's 11
th of the season.
As the last two matches were finishing, lighting flashed the courts and the match saw a 30-minute delay.
Once the matches resumed, Garcia earned the final point for the Eagles as she fended off Sidorenko 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 singles.
