Men's Tennis Earns 5-2 Victory In Marathon Match Against Gardner-Webb

Eagles Will Travel To Davidson, UNC Asheville This Weekend

BOILING SPRINGS, NC –
As five of the six singles matches went into three sets, Winthrop sophomore Yuta Hirokawa clinched the victory at No. 3 singles, as the Eagles defeated Gardner-Webb 5-2 Wednesday afternoon in Boiling Springs, NC.

With the victory, Winthrop goes to 8-9 on the year and 1-1 in the Big South, as GWU drops to 5-10.

In the doubles round, Hirokawa paired up with Luka Stanic and brought down Gardner-Webb's Joao Poli and Brendan Dempsey 8-3 in No. 3 doubles. Clinching the point for the Eagles was Nadav Ruppin and Guy Kubi, as the tandem defeated Adam Knutsson-Sundblad and Korhan Ates 9-8 (2) at the No. 1 position.

The Eagles continued their winning trend in the singles round, earning victories in four matches. Freshman Dylan Comerford got on the scoreboard first with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 win over Roman Piftor in No. 4 singles, as Nadav Ruppin earned a victory over Korhan Ates in No. 1 singles. At the No. 3 position Hirokawa got the win over Ernest Alberch 3-6, 6-0, 6-2, as Kubi defeated Knutsson-Sundblad 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 in No. 2 singles.

The Eagles will be back on the courts on Saturday, March 24 when they travel to Davidson. The doubles round is set for 1 p.m.
