ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's team captured three victories in the singles round, but came up short as the Eagles fell 4-3 to Marshall, Monday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.
Winthrop falls to 6-10 overall, as Marshall extends its six match winning streak and improves to 8-6.
“It was a great collegiate match where both teams played really well,” said head coach
Cid Carvalho. “It was a great preparation for conference play.”
The Eagles started well as the duo of
Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli swept Marshall's Kara Kucin and Ellie Ball 8-0 at the No. 2 position. Winthrop fought hard in the remaining doubles match, but fell short as
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia lost to Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova 9-8 at No.1 and the freshman tandem of Ekin Gunaysu and Monica Aguado fell 8-5 at the No. 3 spot.
In the singles round, Winthrop started to gain momentum as Garcia captured a victory over Voscekova 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. At the No. 5 position, Gunaysu posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Kristina Koprcina 7-5, 6-3. Alkema tallied her ninth singles victory of the season, knocking off Zaprazna in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.
“Although we had our chances to win it,” Carvalho added. “I'm proud of how hard we fought to tie the match by winning three singles matches.”
With the scored tied at the 3-3 mark, the match came down to No. 4 singles as Portioli tried to fend off Kucin. Both players fought till the end, but Portioli's effort fell short as Kucin clinched the match for the Herd, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
“The match came down to the doubles point again,” Carvalho said. “Giovanna gave it her all.”
Winthrop looks to bounce back on Wednesday, March 21 as the Eagles will travel alongside the men's team to Gardner-Webb. The doubles round for both matches is set for 2 p.m.
