Women's Tennis Sweeps UNC Asheville 7-0

Winthrop Remains Perfect In Conference, Will Face Marshall Tomorrow

ASHEVILLE, NC –
The Winthrop women's tennis team remained undefeated in the conference with 7-0 victory over UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.

The win improves Winthrop's record to 6-9 overall and 2-0 in the Big South, as Asheville falls to 5-9 on the year and 0-1 in the conference.

The Eagles started the match with three victories in the doubles round, clinching the opening point. At the No. 1 position, Yasmine Alkema and Andressa Garcia defeated Christin Boissevain and Emily McNall 8-4, as Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli knocked off Jenna Dodge and Amryn Soldier 8-4 at No. 2. Capping off the doubles round was Ekin Gunaysu and Monica Aguado fending off Devon Cavanaugh and Amie Cloer 8-5 at No. 3.

Winthrop continued its winning way in the singles round, dropping just 11 games in the six singles matches. Alkema defeated McNall 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, as Garcia took down Soldier 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. In No. 3 singles, Herrera knocked off Boissevain 6-1, 6-0, as Portioli posted a victory over Dodge 6-0, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. Gunaysu earned a victory over Cavanaugh 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot and Aguado closed out the singles round with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Cloer.

“We played a solid match in the doubles and singles,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “We are looking forward to play Marshall tomorrow.”

The Eagles will square off against the Herd at 1 p.m. at the Memorial Courts and admission is free.
