TAMPA, FL – The Winthrop men's tennis team could not keep up with Big East opponent South Florida, as the Eagles fell 4-0 Sunday afternoon at the USF Varsity Courts.
With the loss, Winthrop falls to 7-9 on the year, as USF improves to 5-11.
South Florida came out fast in the doubles round, capturing all three matches. At the No. 1 position, Winthrop's
Guy Kubi and
Nadav Ruppin were brought down 8-4, as the freshman tandem of
Dylan Comerford and
Rich Meade dropped 8-0 at No. 2. Rounding out the doubles round,
Yuta Hirokawa and
Luka Stanic fell 8-3 in No. 3 doubles.
Winthrop continued to fight hard, but it was not enough as the Bulls won three singles matches, clinching the victory. At No. 1, Wael Kilani defeated Ruppin 6-2, 6-0, as Kubi fell 6-1, 6-1 to USF's Yannick Yoshizawa at the No. 2 spot. Meade fell 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 5 position, and the other matches did not finish due to travel regulations.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, March 21 as they will travel to Gardner-Webb. That match is set for 2 p.m.
