ORLANDO, FL – The Winthrop men's tennis team was unable to capture its second straight victory as the Eagles fell to Central Florida 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the UCF Tennis Complex.
The loss drops the Eagles to 7-8 on the year, as UCF improves to 6-9.
"The team competed well today," head coach Andrew Stubbs said. "These matches usually come down to one point here or there and the little details make a big difference."
Winthrop's duo of
Yuta Hirokawa and
Luka Stanic came away with the lone victory in the doubles round, as the tandem defeated UCF's Eugene Dolgovykh and Matthew Gladstone 8-5 in No. 3 doubles. The Golden Knights took victories in the other two matches, starting the match with the lead.
In the singles round, Hirokawa tallied another win as the sophomore knocked off Mario Samson 6-4, 6-7, 10-6 in No. 4 singles.
Rich Meade was responsible for Winthrop's other point as he defeated Gladstone 7-5, 4-6, 11-9 at the No. 6 position.
"We aren't where we want to be yet," Stubbs said. "But we are getting closer each day."
The Eagles will be back on the courts Sunday, March 18 as they will remain in the Sunshine State to take on South Florida. That match is set for 12 p.m.
