DAYTONA BEACH, FL – The Winthrop men's tennis team opened up its Florida road trip with a 5-2 victory over the Bethune-Cookman Thursday afternoon at the City Island Courts.
The victory takes the Eagles to 7-7 record as Bethune-Cookman falls to 8-9.
Winthrop started strong, as the Eagles swept through the doubles round. The freshman tandem of
Dylan Comerford and
Rich Meade added their eighth doubles victory of the season by knocking off Marc Misanovic and Kip Jackson 8-4 in No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 position,
Yuta Hirokawa and
Luka Stanic defeated Juan Varon and Santiago Lobelo 8-7. Closing out the doubles round,
Nadav Ruppin and
Chase Altieri took down Gilbert Kibet and Diego Garvito 8-5 in No. 3 doubles.
In the singles round, Winthrop tallied four victories to clinch the win over the Wildcats. Ruppin cruised in a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Misanovic in the No. 1 position, as Comerford knocked off Varon 6-4, 7-5 in No. 2 singles. At the No. 3 spot, Hirokawa defeated Lobelo 7-6, 6-2, and Meade got a victory over Moritz Pronath 6-2, 6-3 in No. 5 singles.
Winthrop will continue its road trip of the Sunshine State on Saturday, March 17 as the Eagles will travel to Central Florida. That match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
