WINSTON-SALEM, NC – After dropping the doubles point, the Winthrop women's tennis team tried to manage a comeback but could not keep up, as the Eagles fell to No. 29 ranked Brown 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The loss takes the Eagles to 5-9 on the season, as the Bears improve to 11-3.
The doubles round started well for the Eagles as
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia tallied a victory over Brown's Jessica Harrow and Carissa Aboubakare 8-4 in the No. 1 position. After falling in No. 3 doubles, the point was determined by the No. 2 doubles match. After going to the tiebreak,
Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli could not find an answer against Misia Krasowski and Ariel Caldwell, falling 9-8.
Winthrop climbed back in the match during the singles round as Alkema posted a singles victory over Krasowski 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot. Portioli bounced back after her doubles defeat and won in straight sets over Sarah Kadath 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. The Bears clinched the match early, but Herrera finalized the 4-3 score as she defeated Harrow 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
“I'm proud of the way the girls competed today against Brown,” head coach
Cid Carvalho said. “We had match points in the doubles round and ended up losing the match. The doubles point turned out to be the decisive point.”
Winthrop will be back on the courts on Sunday, March 18 as they will hit the road and square off against conference foe, UNC Asheville. The doubles round will start at 1 p.m.
