Yuta Hirokawa captures a singles victory, but the Eagles came up short as they fell 6-1 to Furman Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.
The loss brings Winthrop to 6-7 on the season, as the Paladins improve to 3-8.
The Eagles fought hard in the doubles round, but could not fend off Furman and fell short of winning the doubles point. The freshman duo of
Rich Meade and
Dylan Comerford cruised in No. 1 doubles, taking down Joel Cook and Alex Christ 8-5. Moments after, Furman's Andrew Mellow and Jacob Behal defeated
Yuta Hirokawa and
Luka Stanic 8-6.
The opening came point came down to No. 3 doubles, as
Nadav Ruppin and
Chase Altieri tried to pull off a comeback on Nate Collins and Watson George after trailing 3-0 early in the match. The tandem came all the way back to force a tiebreak, but eventually fell to Furman's duo, 9-8.
Furman clinched the victory by nabbing the first three singles matches. The lone bright spot came at the No. 3 position as Hirokawa defeated Behal 6-3, 7-6.
The Eagles will now start their Florida road trip as they will face Bethune-Cookman on March 15. That match is set for 3 p.m.
