ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop men's tennis team captured its second straight victory as the Eagles blanked UNC Greensboro 7-0 Thursday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.
With the victory, the Eagles improve to 4-6 on the season, as UNCG falls to 3-5.
The Eagles started strong, winning two doubles matches. In No. 3 doubles,
Yuta Hirokawa and
Luka Stanic cruised to an 8-4 victory over UNC Greensboro's Jimmy Roueche and Cameron Smith. Clinching the opening point was the freshman duo of
Dylan Comerford and
Rich Meade as they knocked off Randy Phillips and Chanon Varapongsittikul, 9-7.
“We played the important points really well today,” head coach Andrew Stubbs said. “That was the biggest difference.”
In the singles round, Winthrop continued its winning ways as the Eagles nabbed all six matches. In No. 1 singles,
Nadav Ruppin brought down Orcun Seyrek 6-0, 6-4, as
Guy Kubi defeated Ahmet Sarioglu at No. 2 singles. Comerford continued to improve his record, bringing down Chanon Varapongsittikul 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 in No. 3 singles, as Hirokawa made his day perfect, knocking off Phillips 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 4 spot. Rounding out the singles round, Stanic defeated Smith 6-3, 6-2 in No. 5 singles and Meade fended off Jimmy Roueche 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.
“Our team's work ethic and determination in practice every day is making a big impact,” Stubbs added. “We are headed in the right direction as a team and we are building momentum."
The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, March 6 as they will remain home against Coker and James Madison. The Coker match is slated for 10 a.m. and the match against JMU is set for 2 p.m.
