BLACKSBURG, VA – The Winthrop women's tennis team came up with a few wins on the court, but it was not enough as No. 61 ranked Virginia Tech defeated the Eagles 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The loss brings the Eagles to 3-5 on the season as the Hokies improve to 3-1.
Winthrop got one victory in the doubles round, but was unable to win the point. The lone win for the Eagles came at No. 1 doubles as junior

Andressa Garcia defeated Courtney Rauscher and Martha Blakely 8-3.
In the singles round, Winthrop were able to pick up a pair of victories as Giovanna Portioli brought down Carol Kahoun 6-1, 7-6(3) in No. 5 singles. The other point came at No. 6 singles as freshman Monica Aguado knocked off Emily Lauten 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in No. 6 singles.
“We are getting better with each match we play,” head coach
Cid Carvalho said. “The competition is tough but that is what we need to improve.”
The Eagles will be in action on Sunday, Feb. 5 as they will stay in the state of Virginia and join the men's squad at Virginia Commonwealth. That match is set for 10 a.m.
