NORFOLK, VA – The Winthrop men's tennis team could not manage a comeback as the Eagles fell to Old Dominion 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.
The loss is the first of the season for Winthrop, as ODU improves to 2-3.
The Eagles were able to take one victory in the double round, but were unable to capture the point. The only win for Winthrop came at No. 1 doubles as
Nadav Ruppin and
Guy Kubi took down Can Centinel and Albert Ochagavia 8-7.
Winthrop tried to fight its way back into the match as Kubi defeated Fahoum Fahoum 6-4, 6-2 in No. 3 singles and
Dylan Comerford continued his winning ways as he defeated Alfredo Rodriguez 6-3, 7-5. The two points were the only points the Eagles could manage, despite the final two matches involving
Luka Stanic and
Rich Meade going into three sets.
“The team left everything on the court and competed well,” head coach Andrew Stubbs said. “We just missed some opportunities to take advantage of the match. We will learn from our mistakes and improve from this match.”
The Eagles will be back on the courts on Sunday, Feb. 5 as they will travel to VCU. That match is set for 2 p.m.
