COLUMBIA, SC – The Winthrop women's tennis team fought hard, but was unable to upset No. 26 South Carolina as the Eagles fell 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Carolina Tennis Center.
Winthrop drops to 5-8 on the season, as South Carolina improves to 7-1.
In the doubles round,
Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli defeated Dominika Kanakova 8-4 in No. 2 doubles. The win was the only victory the Eagles could manage in the doubles round, as the Gamecocks came away with the doubles point.
Winthrop started quickly in the singles round as freshman Ekin Gunaysu set the tone, defeating Josefin Andersson 6-4, 6-1 to tie the score 1-1 in No. 5 singles. The Eagles fought hard in the other five singles matches, as three Eagles went into five sets, but eventually could not keep up with the nationally ranked Gamecocks.
South Carolina captured the next five matches to clinch the 6-1 victory.
“We played a close match against USC,” head coach
Cid Carvalho said. “Ekin won in straight sets and Andressa, Sandra and Giovanna lost in three sets.”
The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, March 10 as they will travel to Winston-Salem to take on Brown in a neutral site contest. That match is set for 2 p.m.
