SPARTANBURG, SC – The Winthrop men's tennis team snapped its six match losing streak as the Eagles knocked off USC Upstate 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Upstate Tennis Complex.
The victory improves Winthrop's record to 3-6 on the season, as Upstate drops to 4-3.
“I am very proud of the way we competed today,” head coach Andrew Stubbs said. “This was a total team effort.”
The Eagles nabbed two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point. At No. 2 doubles,
Dylan Comerford and
Rich Meade clinched the point with a narrow 9-8 win over Upstate's Yvon Haessig and Tyler Grove. Earlier,
Yuta Hirokawa and
Luka Stanic took down Gonzalo Blanco and Jacob Darling 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
In the singles round, Comerford and Meade kept their momentum as they cruised in straight set victories. Comerford took down Tyler Grove 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3, as Meade defeated Darling 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 position. Clinching the Winthrop victory was Hirokawa as he brought down Blanco 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
“Our guys believed in this team and what we stand for, and today was the result of a lot of hard work and determination,” Stubbs added. “We will continue to focus on the process, but it feels great to pull out a match like this.
The Eagles will be back on the courts on Thursday, March 1 as they will return home to take on UNC Greensboro. The doubles round is set to begin at 1 p.m.
