Men's Tennis Hopes Washed Away By No. 70 Georgia State

Eagles Unable To Capture A Match, Faces Upstate On Sunday

Box Score

ATLANTA
, GA – After a lengthy rain delay, the Winthrop men's tennis team could not pull off the upset of No. 70 Georgia State as the Eagles fell 4-0 Friday afternoon at the Sharon Lester Tennis Center.

The loss takes the Eagles to 2-6 on the season as Georgia State captured its second straight win and improves to 6-2 on the year.

Due to the rain delay, the teams agreed to play just the singles round with the first team to reach four points would be declared the winner.

The Panthers took command early, grabbing a win at No. 1 as GSU's Juan Pablo Gutierrez defeated Rich Meade 6-2, 6-1. From that point, the Eagles struggled to find answers as Luka Stanic fell to Lucas Santana 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 and Guy Kubi dropped to Thomas Cook 6-3, 6-3 in No. 2 singles. Georgia State's Matias Hatem clinched the victory for the Panthers as he took down Yuta Hirokawa 6-2, 6-2 in No. 3 singles.

Winthrop will look to break a six match losing streak as the Eagles will travel to USC Upstate on Sunday, Feb. 26. The doubles round is set to start at 2 p.m.
