ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's tennis team got back in the win column as the Eagles blanked Campbell 7-0 Friday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.
The victory takes the Eagles to 5-7 on the season and 1-0 in the conference, as Campbell drops to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big South.
The Eagles started fast, capturing all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles,
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia brought down Karolina Chernaya and Borislava Nikolova 8-3, as Giovanna Portioli and
Sandra Herrera defeated Tamara Stanic and Katya Yegoreychenko 8-7 in No. 2 doubles. Rounding out the doubles round, Ekin Gunaysu and Monica Aguado knocked off Natasha Afridi and Anais Gomar 8-4 in No. 3 doubles.
The winning continued in the singles round as Alkema defeated Chernaya 6-1, 6-3 in No. 1 singles. In No. 2 singles, Garcia took down Stanic 6-3, 6-1, as Herrera posted a victory over Afridi 7-6, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. In No. 4 singles, Portioli brought down Nikolova 6-2, 6-1, as Gunaysu defeated Katya Yegoreychenko in No. 5 singles. Closing out the singles round was Aguado taking down Gomar 6-4, 6-4 in No. 6 singles.
“I'm proud of the way the girls played today,” head coach
Cid Carvalho said. “We are improving with each match we play.”
The Eagles were scheduled to play Georgia State on Feb. 19, but with rain pending, that match has been cancelled. Winthrop will be back on the courts Sunday, Feb. 26 when the Eagles will travel to Columbia, SC to take on South Carolina. That match is set for 1 p.m.
