ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop men's tennis team fell short of capturing its opening conference match of the season, dropping to Campbell 4-3 Friday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.
The loss takes the Eagles to 2-5 on the season, as Campbell gets its first Big South victory since rejoining the conference and improves to 3-1 overall.
In the doubles round, the Eagles came away with a victory at No. 3 doubles as
Yuta Hirokawa and
Luka Stanic brought down Campbell's Iwdal August and Ondrej Kralik 8-5. Winthrop came up short in the other two doubles matches, dropping the opening point.
The Eagles were able to claw back in the singles round, but came up just short as Winthrop's
Guy Kubi got a victory over Adrien Rossignon 6-4, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, Hirokawa continued his winning ways over David Clavera 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (2) and
Dylan Comerford defeated Kaniewski Dominik 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (8) in No. 4 singles.
“I want to congratulate Campbell on a well played match. Our guys compete hard until the last point and we will get better from this experience,” head coach Andrew Stubbs said. “The team has a renewed sense of unity and belief after today's match. We are a team that still has its best tennis ahead of us.”
Winthrop will return to action on Friday, Feb. 24 as they will travel to Georgia State. That match is set to begin at 12 p.m.
