RICHMOND, KY – The Winthrop women's tennis team snapped its five-match losing streak as the Eagles defeated Eastern Kentucky 5-2 Friday afternoon at the Greg Adams Indoor Tennis Center.
The victory brings the Eagles to 4-6 on the season, as EKU suffered its first loss of the season and drops to 3-1.
Winthrop took control in the doubles round, sweeping the Colonels in all three matches. In No. 1 doubles,
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia brought down Milena Poffo and Kristina Labeja 8-6.
Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli knocked off Amandine Faouzi and Melissa Gerritsen 8-7 in No. 2 doubles and the freshman duo of Monica Aguado and Ekin Gunaysu defeated Marcela Jimenez and Saioa Oscoz 8-2 in No. 3 doubles.
In the singles round, the Eagles continued the winning trend as Garcia finished off her night with a win over Labeja in No. 2 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. In No. 3 singles, Herrera defeated Gerritsen 6-3, 7-6 as Portioli took down Poffo 6-4, 7-5 in No. 4 singles. Rounding off the scoring was Gunaysu earning a victory over Oscoz 7-5, 6-4 in No. 5 singles.
“Eastern Kentucky was very tough,” head coach
Cid Carvalho said. “But I'm proud of the way our girls were able to win the big points.”
Winthrop will continue its Kentucky road trip as the Eagles will travel to Lexington to take on the No. 71 ranked Kentucky Wildcats. That match is slated for 10 a.m.
