ROCK HILL, SC—Marc Segarra's goal just before halftime proved to be the game-winner as Winthrop defeated Longwood 2-0, Wednesday evening in Big South Conference men's soccer action.
It was “Senior Night” for the Eagles as Segarra shined in possibly his final home match as Winthrop improved to 9-7-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the league. Longwood falls to 3-12-3 overall and 2-8-1 in the Big South.
The first half looked as if it was going to finish scoreless as each team had come up empty on their chances offensively. The Eagles collected the ball in the back and
Magnus Thorsson sent a long ball over the top of the Lancers defense as Segarra chased down the ball with a defender trailing. Segarra got to the bouncing ball first and as the Longwood keeper Paul Hegedus came out, Segarra hit a one-touch shot over his head and into the net with 34 seconds to go in the half. It was his sixth of the season.
Both teams pressed and Longwood had several opportunities to tie the match but the Eagles were able to strike first late in the match with an insurance goal as
Adriano Negri netted his first goal of the season.
Achille Obougou and Negri played a couple of nice one-touch wall passes and Obougou got free into space entering the 18-yard box. He then played the ball across the mouth of the goal as Hegedus came out to close the angle and Negri passed the ball into the open.
Following the second goal, Longwood came right back and Ikechukwu Etonyeaku dribbled a couple of defenders and let one fly from about 20 yards, but a Winthrop defender got his foot in the way to slow up some of the shot and
Enrique Miranda was able to collect the ball for one of his seven saves. In the 83
rd minute the Lancers pressed again and Daena Bodie was set up with a free header at the penalty spot but his shot was low and just wide of the post to the left.
Longwood finished the game with a 15-10 advantage in shots as Hegedus finished with two saves and Miranda has seven to earn his second straight shutout and 11
th of his career.
The Eagles will wrap-up the regular season on Saturday at Radford as it looks to possibly host a first round match of the Big South Tournament next week. Game time is 6 p.m. as the Eagles need a win and a High Point loss at Coastal Carolina in order for that to happen. Longwood wrapped up its regular season tonight and will await Saturday's results to see if it makes the eight-team field of the tournament.
