DURHAM, NC – The No. 67 ranked Winthrop tennis team started strong, but fell in the singles round as College of Charleston defeated the Eagles 4-2 Sunday morning at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Duke University.
The Eagles drop to 3-4 on the season, as the Cougars earned their first win of the season.
In the doubles round, Winthrop was able to capture the point as
Sandra Herrera and Monica Aguado clinched the round, taking down College of Charleston's Caroline Newman and Christin Newman 9-7 in No. 3 doubles. The other win came at No. 1 doubles as
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia brought down Samantha Maddox and Irene Viana, 8-1.
Winthrop could not continue its winning trend in singles action as the Cougars took four matches to take the victory. The lone victory for the Eagles came at No. 2 singles as the sophomore Garcia defeated Caroline Newman 6-3, 6-1.
"We knew coming into the match that this was going to be a tough match," head coach
Cid Carvalho said. "Even after winning a very tough doubles point, we knew we would have to work hard in singles. I give a lot of credit to Charleston for winning the match."
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4 as they travel to Virginia Tech. That match is set for 10 a.m.
