DURHAM, NC – The No. 67 ranked Winthrop women's tennis team fell to No. 68 ranked Illinois 7-0 in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff Tournament at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center, hosted by Duke University.
The defeat drops the Eagles to 3-3 on the season, as Illinois improves to 4-0.
Winthrop could not find answers in the doubles round as Winthrop's
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia were defeated by Rachael White and Allison Falkin 8-3 in No. 1 doubles and the Illinois duo of Marisa Lambropoulos and Melissa Kopinski took down
Sandra Herrera and Monica Aguado 8-2 in No. 3 doubles.
In the singles round, the Eagles were unable to capture a set, as Illinois took the 7-0 victory.
"Illinois played really well and never allowed our girls into the match," head coach
Cid Carvalho said. "Whatever we tried they had the answer for it."
Winthrop will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 28 against the loser of the Duke and College of Charleston match. That match is set for 9 a.m.
