ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop men's tennis team opened up its 2012 season on a positive note, earning a shutout win over USC Lancaster and a 5-2 victory over Wofford, Saturday at Memorial Courts.
“It is always a difficult task to play two matches in one day,” head coach Andrew Stubbs said. “But our guys competed for every point.”
In the victory over the Lancers, Winthrop was able to sweep through the doubles round. In No. 1 doubles, Winthrop's
Guy Kubi and
Nadav Ruppin knocked off Wilson Mathewes and Dave Fosnacht 8-3.
Dejon Bivens and
Yuta Hirokawa shutout Pedro Rodriguez and Neil Andersen 8-0 in No. 2 doubles and
Dylan Comerford paired up with
Rich Meade to defeat Justin Lewis and Matthew Canelon 8-3 in No. 3 doubles.
The Eagles continued their winning ways in singles action as they captured all six points. In No. 1 singles, Hirokawa knocked off Rodriguez 6-1, 6-1, as Kubi took down Mathewes 6-2, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. Comerford got the win at No. 3 singles, defeating Fosnacht 6-2, 6-3 and Stanic got a victory over Andersen 6-1, 6-0 in No. 4 singles. Rounding out the singles round, Meade blanked Lewis 6-0, 6-0 in No. 5 singles and
Chase Altieri won in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 in No. 6 singles.
In the match against Wofford, the Eagles got started quickly once again, capturing all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Kubi and Ruppin got a win over Wofford's Tinus Van Wyk and Rob Galloway 8-7, as Bivens and Hirokawa teamed up and defeated Jackson Keith and Walker Heffron 8-2 in No. 2 doubles. In No. 3 doubles, Comerford and Meade brought down Jack Seiffert and Tom Wood 8-2 in No. 3 doubles.
Winthrop closed out the match quickly as Kubi got the first win in the singles round, knocking off Galloway 6-1, 6-4 in No. 4 singles. The second and third victories came at No. 5 singles as Comerford defeated Wood 6-1, 6-1 and No. 2 singles as Ruppin took down Drew Superstein 6-3, 6-2. Winthrop's final point came from Hirokawa who defeated Keith 6-2, 6-4 in No. 3 singles.
“We have been looking forward to today since last April and it was a great way to start the season,” Stubbs said. “We are pleased to get these wins under our belt and will now focus our attention on our matches against Old Dominion and Virginia Commonwealth next weekend."
Winthrop will be back in action on Feb. 4 as the Eagles travel to Old Dominion. That match is set for 10 a.m.
