WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Junior Giovanna Portioli got a key singles win to lead the No. 67 ranked Winthrop women's tennis team to an upset 4-3 victory over No. 62 ranked Wake Forest Sunday evening at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Facility.
The victory brings the Eagles to 3-1 on the season.
Winthrop did not start well as the Eagles could not capture the doubles point. Wake Forest's No. 20 ranked doubles duo of Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert defeated
Yasmine Alkema and
Andressa Garcia in No. 1 doubles, 8-4. In No. 2 doubles, Winthrop's Ekin Gunaysu and Giovanna Portioli were knocked off by Ryann Cutillo and Karen Forman, 8-4. The tandem of Monica Aguado and
Sandra Herrera got a win by forfeit.
In the singles round, Alkema captured a win by retirement over No. 93 ranked Kayla Duncan. The Eagles also came away with a win in No. 4 singles as Portioli defeated Forman 6-3, 6-0. The win by Portioli gave Winthrop the victory as Wake Forest could not field players in No. 5 or 6 singles.
"Although Wake did not have their full line up due to injuries it was still a very hard match for us to win,” head coach
Cid Carvalho said. “I'm proud of my girls to have gotten the job done. It was a good win for us."
The Eagles will their tour of the Atlantic Coast Conference as they travel to Clemson on Wednesday, Jan. 25
th. That match is set for 2 p.m.
