RALEIGH, NC – The No. 67
th ranked Winthrop women's tennis team came away both a win and a loss on Saturday as the Eagles defeated Davidson 5-0, but later fell to No. 34 ranked North Carolina State 6-1 at the J.W. Isnerhour Tennis Facility.
With the spilt, the Eagles go to 2-1 on the young season.
In the match against Davidson, the Eagles were able to capture the doubles point as the freshmen duo Ekin Gunaysu and Monica Aguado defeated Catherine Wood and Blake Nickle 8-2.
In singles action, the Eagles won every set as
Yasmine Alkema took down Brites Moniz-Soares 6-2, 6-0 in No. 1 singles, as sophomore
Andressa Garcia knocked off Katherine Diccinson 6-2, 6-1 in No. 2 singles.
Sandra Herrera got the victory over Elise Hand 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 singles and Giovanna Portioli defeated Frizzi Bschorer 6-0, 6-4 in No. 4 singles.
The Eagles were able to get one victory in the doubles round, but could not come up with the point. In No. 1 singles, Alkema and Garcia captured a win over Tatiana Illova and Elisha Hande, 8-4
In the singles round, Winthrop came away with one victory as freshman Ekin Gunaysu brought down Chole Smith 6-2, 6-3 in No. 5 singles.
The Eagles return to the courts on Sunday, Jan. 22 in Winston-Salem, NC to take on Wake Forest. That match is slated for 4:30 p.m.
