SPARTANBURG, SC – The 67
th ranked Winthrop women's tennis team opened up the 2012 season with a victory over Wofford 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the John E. Reeves Tennis Center.
Winthrop started smoothly as the Eagles captured the doubles points, winning two of the three matches. In No. 1 doubles, junior
Yasmine Alkema and sophomore
Andressa Garcia took down Wofford's Guinn Garcia and Sarah Evans 8-5. On the next court, Winthrop's Ekin Gunaysu and Monica Aguado knocked off Emily Przystawski and Othilia Lindqvist 8-6 in No. 2 doubles.
The Eagles dominated the singles round as they took all six matches. Alkema brought down Evans in No. 1 singles 1-6, 6-3, 10-3, as
Andressa Garcia defeated Othilia Lindqvist 6-2, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, junior Giovanna Portioli knocked off Audrey Coventry 6-4, 5-7, 12-10 in No. 3 singles, and freshman Gunaysu made her Eagles debut a memorable one, beating Przystawski 6-7 (3-6), 6-2, 10-5 in No. 4 singles. Rounding out the results was freshman Monica Aguado defeating Samantha Sullivan 6-2, 6-2 in No. 5 singles and freshman Camille Amrani shutting out Carter Tindall 6-0, 6-0 in No. 6 singles.
"I'm proud of the girls and the way they started the season," head coach
Cid Carvalho said. "Wofford is a good team and that is a solid win."
The nationally ranked Eagles will travel to Raleigh, NC on Saturday, Jan. 21 to take on Davidson and 34
th ranked North Carolina State. Those matches are set for 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
