ROCK HILL, SC--The Winthrop men's soccer team is off to its first 3-0 start since 2006 after an own goal lifted Winthrop to a 3-2 overtime victory over Wofford College, Saturday evening in the Big South/Southern Shootout.
Winthrop's Josh Goldstein had just come on to the field as a sub about a minute prior to a throw-in he launched toward goal was deflected off a Wofford defender's head and into the near post for an own goal.
The loss was the first for Wofford, which falls to 2-1 on the year. It was the second straight season the two teams went to overtime as they played to a 1-1 draw in 2010 in Spartanburg, SC.
The Eagles trailed 2-0 at the break, but fought back to tie the match 2-2 in the 84th minute on junior Alex Mantchev's second goal of the match. Alex Isern ripped a shot from about 16 yards at an angle to the right of Wofford keeper Zach Woolever. The initial shot was saved, but the ball popped up and Mantchev was in the right spot at the right time to put the ball into the net to even it up.
“It certainly was a game of two different halves,” said Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko. “They had the better of the first and we had the better in the second and overtime. I was very pleased with our work ethic in the second half. I think there is a lot of potential there if we can start defending better individually and as a unit.”
The Terriers struck first in the 11th minute when Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez scored off a corner kick. Ethan Miller served the corner to the back post where Forrest Lasso headed the ball back across the mouth of the goal where Gonzalez redirected the ball into the net with his head.
In the 25th minute, Dennis Moore gave Wofford a 2-0 advantage when he took advantage of a soft clear from the Winthrop defense. Moore took a soft headed clear, took a touch and then ripped a shot a step inside the 18-yard box into the lower left corner.
Winthrop got on the board in the 65th minute when Mantchev buried a shot from about 15 yards straight away. Senior Matt Horn's throw-in found Mpumelelo Matutu, who immediately turned and found Mantchev unmarked at the top of the box. Mantchev turned and ripped a low shot into the corner.
Winthrop will hit the road for its first action of the season away from Eagle Field when it takes on College of Charleston, Friday, Sept. 9 at the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational at 4:30 p.m. Winthrop will then take on Furman Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2:30 p.m.
