ROCK HILL, SC--Sophomore
Andressa Garcia captured the Flight C singles title as the Winthrop women's tennis team competed this past weekend at the UVa Fall Invitational.
Garcia, who had won the Flight D singles last year at Virginia, won her singles title by defeating Elisha Hande of North Carolina State, 6-2, 6-3.
In other Lady Eagles results, team captain and senior
Sandra Herrera fell in the Flight B semi-finals to UVA's Molly O'koniewski, who went on to win the tournament, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
In the Flight A singles, junior
Yasmine Alkema beat No. 114 nationally-ranked Tatiana Illova of NC State, 7-6, 6-0 before falling in the second round to UVA's Li Xi, 6-2, 6-2. In the Flight C singles, junior
Giovanna Portiolli lost a disputed match against Karen Foreman of Wake Forest, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6.
In doubles play, Alkema and Garcia reached the semifinals but fell to the UNC Greensboro duo of Tooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty, 8-6.
Last week in Williamsburg, VA, Winthrop freshman Ekin Gunaysu captured the consolation draw of the Flight A singles at the 19th annual William and Mary Invitational by defeating Tulane's Carolina Thornton 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 in a grueling finals match. Another Lady Eagle newcomer Camille Amrani fell to VCU's Ana Bara 6-0, 6-2 in the Flight B singles first round. Bara went on to win the title.
In doubles play, Gunaysu and Amrani fell in the second round to Tulane's Emma Levy and Mariam Kurdadze, who advanced to the finals, by an 8-2 score.
The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Sept. 30 as they head to Winston-Salem, NC, for the Wake Forest Tournament.
