Rohan Is First Winthrop Player Drafted By Mets

ROCK HILL, SC – Winthrop catcher Eddie Rohan has been selected by the New York Mets in the 50th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft Wednesday afternoon.

He becomes the second Eagle baseball player to be drafted as Tyler Mizenko was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 28th round on June 7. Rohan was the 1,152nd overall pick in the draft, and is also the first Winthrop player to be picked by the Mets in program history.

"I am very excited about Eddie being selected by the New York Mets," said head coach Tom Riginos. "He has meant alot to this program over the last four seasons and now he gets to continue his baseball career on the next level."

Rohan, a senior from Youngstown, OH, finished his career as an Eagle with a .322 average, 47 home runs and 173 RBI. He ranks second at Winthrop and third in the Big South for career home runs, and fourth in career total bases. Rohan became the first Eagle, and third player in conference history, this season to be named All-Conference in four consecutive seasons.

He was a Freshman All-American selection by Collegiate Baseball and Ping! Baseball in 2008, while garnering Third Team Preseason All-American accolades by Louisville Slugger in 2009.

Rohan concluded his senior season with a .342 batting average, five home runs, 38 RBI and 98 total bases. He led Winthrop in all four of those categories. Rohan also was the team-leader in home runs during each of his four seasons and ranks sixth all-time in school history with 222 games started.

This season he became just the 30th player in Big South history to record 55 career doubles, and will exit the Eagles ranked in the top 10 all-time for at-bats, hits, doubles, RBI and hit by pitches.
