Lake Tosses Complete Game In Winthrop’s 4-1 Victory Over Gardner-Webb

Thomas Homers For Third Time This Season

Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC –
Robert Lake threw the fourth complete game of his career on Friday evening as the Winthrop Eagles picked up a 4-1 victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles improve to 27-27 overall and 15-11 in the conference, while the Runnin' Bulldogs drop to 29-21-1 on the season and 13-13 in conference play.

Lake (4-4) allowed just one run on five hits, no walks and three strikeouts against Gardner-Webb. It was the first complete game of the season for him. Erik Heiligenstadt (3-6) took the loss surrendering four runs on eight hits, one walk and no strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.

“You have to give credit to pitching coach Clint Chrysler,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “He is doing a great job with the pitchers. Our two performances this weekend, so far, are something special. Tyler Mizenko went out yesterday and threw a gem, and Robert Lake one-upped him today. Robert was in control all day and never really got into trouble. He made one bad pitch on the home run, but that's about it. I am very proud of Robert.”

Adam McFarland gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the top of the third with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, to right center field, but Winthrop would tie the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out RBI single to right center field by TJ Olesczuk. Cam Walters scored on the single after he doubled to left center field to start the fourth for the Eagles.

Winthrop plated three runs in the seventh inning to take a 4-1 lead highlighted by Brett Thomas' two-run homer to right field. The Eagles began the seventh with a Chas Crane single to left field, and then moved to third on a double down the left field line by Olesczuk. Crane later scored on a wild pitch by Heiligenstadt. Olesczuk came home on the Thomas home run following the wild pitch. The long ball by Thomas was his third this season.

“We're peaking at the right time,” Riginos said. “The guys are playing well right now in all three phases of the game. We are playing great defense and getting timely hitting.

Walters and Olesczuk led Winthrop offensively with two hits each on the evening, while Thomas drove in a team-high two RBI. Five different Gardner-Webb hitters posted one hit apiece, and McFarland had the lone RBI.

The Eagles and Runnin' Bulldogs will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday, May 21 at 1 p.m. It will also be Senior Day for Winthrop.
